The West Bank was a landlocked territory and comprised the south western part of Germany and the Southern Netherlands on the west bank of the Rhine in Europe. To the east, the West Bank shared border with the Holy Roman Empire. Since the French Revolutionary Wars, most of the West Bank had been under changing control of French and Austrian forces.
For years prior to the Revolutionary Wars, the area known as the West Bank was under control of the archbishoprics of Mainz and Trier, as well as smaller Landlords.
